There are two primary ways to renew the Work Permit for your Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) in Singapore: through a maid agency or by handling it yourself.
1. Using a maid agency:
This method is convenient and straightforward, especially for busy employers who prefer to delegate the task to an agency, although it will involve an administrative fee.
2. Renewing the Work Permit yourself:
First, confirm that your maid is willing to extend her contract for another two years and discuss any changes to her salary, days off, or other terms. Given the Covid-19 situation, you might want to negotiate compensation for unused days off to minimize outings unless necessary.
Next, obtain affordable maid insurance. Renewing independently allows you to choose from a broader range of insurance options. You can search online for cost-effective plans or consult your maid agency for assistance.
Then, visit the Ministry of Manpower’s (MOM) website with your insurance policy details, credit card for the renewal fee, and SingPass credentials. The renewal process typically starts about eight weeks before the permit expires, triggered by a renewal letter from MOM. If a medical examination is required, ensure the completed form is uploaded as instructed.
MOM suggests transferring maids to new employers rather than repatriating them, saving repatriation costs and helping families in need of domestic workers. If you opt for a transfer, contact us for support. We may also provide accommodation and meals for your maid while she seeks new employment.
It’s important to renew the Work Permit on time to avoid penalties, fines, and liability for the maid’s levy after the permit expires. If you need more time, you can request a short extension from MOM.
If you need to find a new maid due to your current maid’s desire to work elsewhere or return home, we can assist in finding a suitable replacement for your family.
