Safeguard Your Maid Against Scams in Singapore

Safeguard Your Maid Against Scams in Singapore

Your maid, especially if she is coming to work in Singapore for the first time, might be vulnerable to scams. Here are some tips to help prevent her from falling prey:

Safeguard Yourself from WhatsApp Account Takeover Scams

Be cautious of WhatsApp messages that seem to be from friends or family, requesting a six-digit verification code sent to you accidentally. Avoid responding to such messages to prevent the risk of losing your WhatsApp account.

Protect yourself with these measures:

  1. Exercise caution with unusual requests, even from known contacts.
  2. Never share WhatsApp verification codes, personal information, or financial details.
  3. Enable ‘Two-Step Verification’: Open WhatsApp, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Account’ > ‘Two-step Verification’ > ‘Enable.’
  4. Change your voicemail account’s default PIN to enhance security, or deactivate the feature if unnecessary. Contact your telecom provider for assistance.

Be cautious of phishing scams that involve impersonation of government agencies or banks.

Be vigilant for phone numbers with a “+” sign, indicating overseas calls. Exercise caution, especially if unexpected, and ignore calls with a “+65” prefix if not anticipated.

Never disclose personal, banking, or debit card details. Genuine government agencies or banks won’t request personal information or bank transfers via phone or robocalls.

Stay alert for online loan scams, particularly messages offering loans. Avoid responding to unlicensed money syndicates, ignore, block, and report unsolicited loan ads, and refrain from sharing personal details or transferring money to strangers.

Stay vigilant for Cash-on-Delivery (COD) scams, especially during the Great Singapore Sale.

This scam involves paying cash for parcels:

  1. That were not purchased.
  2. That do not match the actual order.

Victims end up paying for worthless items, and the scammer escapes with the money. To avoid this, refuse to pay for unordered items and reject suspicious parcels.

Avoid falling victim to love scams.

Scammers often befriend and build relationships with their targets on social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram.

Here are some tactics they may use:

  1. Request payment for the release of a parcel supposedly detained by authorities.
  2. Ask for money, claiming to face financial difficulties. The requested amount may increase, and the scammer may disappear

Stay alert and don’t be deceived by these love scams!
