Health Insurance
To begin with, it is imperative to obtain medical insurance before your helper’s arrival in Singapore. It’s important to note that foreigners do not receive subsidies like Singaporeans, potentially leading to larger medical bills compared to Singaporeans at Restructured Hospitals. Therefore, it is crucial that your helper’s insurance plan offers adequate coverage to address any medical needs, providing reassurance in the face of unforeseen healthcare expenses.
According to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), medical insurance must provide coverage of at least $15,000 per year for inpatient care and day surgery during your helper’s tenure in Singapore. Additionally, it is highly recommended to purchase supplementary insurance coverage to safeguard against excessive medical costs incurred by your MDW.
You may also want to verify if the insurer offers a rider for outpatient expenses and if they cover other conditions such as pre-existing conditions and mental illnesses. While the rider is optional, having this additional layer of protection can provide added peace of mind. Therefore, it is essential to carefully consider the features and benefits of your insurance plan to ensure comprehensive protection.
Personal Accident Insurance
Employers are also mandated to procure personal accident insurance (PAI) with a minimum coverage of $60,000 per year. This insurance serves to safeguard your helper and her family by offering a lump sum compensation in the event of sudden, unforeseen incidents resulting in permanent disability or death. Additionally, it’s advisable to verify whether your insurance policy includes coverage for repatriation expenses, as these payouts may prove useful if there is a need to repatriate your helper.
Security Bond
Typically, most insurance packages for MDWs incorporate the Security Bond along with the Personal Accident Insurance cover. The Security Bond, set at $5,000, serves as a contractual commitment payable to the government if either you or your worker violates the law or the conditions of the Work Permit during her employment.
Before Moving Forward
Ensure that the insurance plans you are acquiring align with all MOM requirements, and that you thoroughly understand the features of the insurance plans you are procuring for your helper. Additionally, there are numerous supplementary options to contemplate incorporating into your insurance plans, such as enhancing personal accident and medical coverage through additional premiums, as medical expenses are not subsidized for non-Singaporeans.
